China approved Nokia’s 17.6bn dollar acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent

Nokia is coming back and coming to China, the biggest market of the world. Specifically, China approved Nokia Oyj’s 17.6 billion dollar takeover of the French wireless-network rival Alcatel-Lucent SA. Besides, the last important antitrust approval necessary before the acquisition will be likely to be completed next year.

Nokia world's records

“The clearance in China completes the material antitrust review process required for the transaction,” said Nokia. Finally Nokia made it after keenly waiting for the Chinese clearance. At first, the company worried that the local authorities would delay the deal since some big telecoms equipment providers such as Huawei and ZTE might be directly much affected by the agreement between Alcatel-Lucent (a French company) and Nokia (Finnish) businesses.

With this decision by China’s Ministry of Commerce, it helps Nokia broaden its product offering and reduce costs when taking on Sweden’s Ericsson AB and China’s Huawei Technologies Co. In addition, it is said that Nokia expects the deal to be completed in the H1 of 2016, which is also the year seeing the Nokia comeback.

“It should not be an issue at all as Nokia has already taken firm employment engagement in France,” said Sebastien Sztabowicz, an analyst at Kepler Cheuvreux. He also added that the filing of the public exchange offer for Alcatel-Lucent securities and an approval from the Nokia’s shareholders (needing 50 per cent of votes to be passed) would be the next step.

“Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent will continue to co-operate with the French government to obtain formal approval from the Ministry of Economy, after which Nokia will proceed with the filing of the previously announced public exchange offer for Alcatel-Lucent securities,” said Nokia.

With this news and others related to Nokia these days, it is like Nokia is really beginning getting back on track. Hope that they will have good business in China as well in other parts of the world!

7. Elephone Vowney

Elephone Vowney is a Chinese smartphone introduced in late September – early October. The reason why we feature this phone is that, compare to the price tag, Elephone Vowney specs make a very good deal beside the 4GB RAM: 2K display, 4000 mAH and more excitingly, dual boot support.

The Elephone Vowney price in Malaysia will be around RM1,500-RM1,700.

8. Oppo R7S

Swap OnePlus 2 for a Meizu PRO 5 – Do you dare?

We have seen OnePlus hold a “contest” where people exchange their Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, or Samsung Galaxy Note 5 for a free OnePlus 2. Of course the company will donate the phones to a charitable organization called Hope Phones to help bring medical tech to where it is needed. However, we think the idea just failed since those Samsung devices are much more expensive and powerful than an OP 2. But that is the story of OnePlus 2 and Samsung phones. Say, if OnePlus 2 can be exchanged for another one at its level, maybe the “contest” will be more… reasonable 😎 .

meizu

Lately, Meizu has announced that they are having a plan aiming at OnePlus 2 users. Accordingly, who is owning a OnePlus 2 can fill up a form and win a chance to swap their OP 2 for a Meizu PRO 5, which is like swapping a flagship for another flagship. The method is quite similar to OnePlus team, but this time, Meizu seems more rational. In one of their recent Facebook posts, they say:

“Want to swap your OnePlus phone for a Meizu PRO 5? Tell us why you want to #TurnTheHeatOff and you could win!”

OnePlus 2 Specs Meizu Pro 5 Specs
Dimensions 151.8 x 74.9 x 9.9 mm 156.7 x 78 x 7.5 mm
Weight 175 g 168 g
Display 5.5-inch Full HD (~401 ppi) LTPS LCD 5.7-inch Full HD (~386) AMOLED
OS Oxygen 2.1 UI based on Android OS, v5.1 (Lollipop) Flyme 5.0 based on Android v5.1 Lollipop
Processor Snapdragon 810 Exynos 7420
ROM 16/64 GB (non-expandable) 32/64 GB (expandable up to 128 GB)
RAM 3/4 GB 3/4 GB
Camera Rear: 13 MP, optical image stabilization, laser autofocus, dual-LED flashFront: 5 MP, 1080p@30fps Rear: 21 MP, phase detection & laser autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flashFront: 5 MP, 1080p@30fps
Battery Non-removable Li-Po 3300 mAh Non-removable Li-Ion 3050 mAh
SIM Dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by) Dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by)
Color Sandstone Black Gray, Gold, Silver, Black/Silver
Price 16GB+3GB: $329 (~RM1,420)64GB+4GB: $389 (~RM1,680) 32GB+3GB: 2,799 Yuan (~RM1,900)64GB+4GB: 3,099 Yuan (~RM2,100)

In terms of dimensions and weights, we can easily recognize that the Meizu Pro 5 is thinner, lighter and more colorful (we mean Pro 5 has more color options for you to choose) than the OP 2 (coming with just Sandstone Black). Furthermore, the display of Pro 5 measures 5.7 inches, bigger than the 5.5-inch one of OnePlus 2 with the same Full HD resolution. Nonetheless, we do not think the size really matters, and 5.7 inches can even make it harder for you to hold or put in your pocket.

As for the RAM and ROM, they are quite similar when splitting into 2 versions for 3GB and 4GB RAM. Yet, we guess that Pro 5 will be liked more since it has an expandable internal storage (up to 128GB) while OP 2 does not.

Next, we should definitely talk about camera. It is not difficult to realize that Meizu has very generously equipped their smartphone with an awesome rear shooter of 21 megapixels. Wow, that’s a lot! Anyhow, at some point such as battery, OP 2 beats Meizu Pro 5 although the difference is not big. OP 2 has a 3,300mAh batt while Pro 5 only has a 3,050mAh one.

oneplus 2 unboxing

Well, those are some differences in specs. In general, we can say that Meizu Pro 5 is kind of better than OnePlus 2. And looking at the prices, there is no doubt that Meizu Pro 5 price is more than OnePlus 2 price, which means that you get no loss in this deal, don’t you?!

That’s what we think. But, what do you think?

HTC One A9: 5″ AMOLED, new Snapdragon 617 and Android 6.0 out of the box

Finally, some authentic information about HTC One A9 has been available and it is known as the first smartphone (besides Nexus) to come with Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS out of the box. Apart from that, we also know other official HTC One A9 specs. Check them out:

htconea9

  HTC One A9 Specs
Dimensions 145.8 x 70.8 x 7.3 mm
Weight 143 g
Display 5.0-inch Full HD (~441 ppi) AMOLED
OS Android OS, v6.0 (Marshmallow)
Processor Snapdragon 617
ROM 16/32 GB (expandable up to 200 GB)
RAM 2/3 GB
Camera Rear: 13 MP, optical image stabilization, autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flashFront: 4 MP, 1080p
Battery Non-removable Li-Ion 2150 mAh
SIM Nano-SIM
Color Carbon Gray, Opal Silver, Topaz Gold, Deep Garnet

Definitely HTC One A9 is not a phablet but a real smartphone with a size of 5 inches suitable for you to put it in your pocket. Moreover, it is the first device not only in the HTC house but also in the world since Snapdragon 817 is the latest chip produced by Qualcomm, made for mid-end devices yet pretty closer to the high-end spectrum. Specifically, it supports X8 LTE with Cat 7 and speeds of up to 200Mbps down and 100Mbps up. Furthermore, the chip’s dual-ISPs will allow the phone to take up to 21MP photos and with 8 cores, SD817 can be clocked up to 1.5GHz.

htc_2

As for the RAM, consumers will have 2 options: 2GB and 3GB RAM depending on the version. In addition, A9 has a combo of 13MP rear and 4MP front snapper (which is lower than most phones on the market). However, one thing that can be a plus for the A9 is its ability capturing RAW and Hyperlapse (stabilized time-lapse) videos.

A fingerprint is also built in the home button and able to unlock your device even while the screen is turned off. The whole machine is powered by a 2,150 mAh battery with Quick Charge 2.0 (and 3.0) support that can help charge your batt super fast yet as long as you have a proper 15W HTC charger.

In terms of HTC One A9 price and availability, it will be released next month November in Opal Silver, Carbon Grey, Deep Garnet and Topaz Gold color. We are pretty close to the day! Unfortunately, HTC One A9 price as well as HTC One A9 price in Malaysia has not been confirmed yet but rumored to be 599,9 euro (~RM2,900). We will come back with more details later 🙂 !

htconea9

In conclusion, we would like to welcome HTC One A9 to the smartphone world. No matter how similar to an Apple iPhone it looks, A9 is still a new device that sports different features and perhaps even stronger than the iPhone. What do you think of it? Let us know 😉 !

Smartphone PRO War: Best from Xiaomi, Meizu, ZTE, Lenovo and LG

Xiaomi Mi Note Pro, Meizu Pro 5, ZTE Axon Pro, Lenovo VIBE Z2 Pro and LG G4 Pro are the smartphones we will be checking today. So, at first, can you recognize what they all have in common? 😉

Meizu-Pro-5

We guess you did! 😀

Yes, they all contain the word “PRO” in their names. But, the point is that we do not know if they are at the same level of strength in terms of specs, and in combination with the price, which one is the best. Therefore, we would like to make a comparison with those 5 great PRO phones, or in other words, we will let them join a PRO WAR and find out the winner!

SPECS and PRICES: What do you guys have?

pro war

In general, we have to say that those phones are so PRO! What they’ve got are the top specs in the mobile industry nowadays, which is why they are flagships of their own brands. Before digging deeper, we want to summarize a bit their “dates of birth” basing on their announcement dates.

Obviously, Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro is the oldest here when released in September, 2014. However, it still has some awesome features that the other do not have. What are they? We will know later. As for the youngest phone, it is LG G4 Pro. Though it has not been announced publicly, we spotted news about G4 Pro in the Q3 of 2015 and expected to hear something official about it in this quarter. For the others, orderly we have Xiaomi Mi Note Pro launch happening in January, 2015, then ZTE Axon Pro launch in July, 2015 and Meizu Pro 5 launch in September, 2015.

And now, let’s discuss a bit their dimensions and weights. Because those information for LG G4 Pro has not been available yet, we would like to compare the rest devices. The phones from Xiaomi, Meizu, and Lenovo share quite similar thicknesses while ZTE Axon Pro is pretty thicker. With 161 grams, Xiaomi Mi Note Pro is totally the lightest here and Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro is the heaviest due to 179 grams.

In terms of screen and processor, all of them have the sizes of phablets, ranging from 5.5 inches (Axon Pro) to 6 inches (Z2 Pro). On the other hand, Meizu Pro 5 really… stands out with only Full HD AMOLED display. Meanwhile, the others’ ones (even an old model like Lenovo Vibe Z2) are capable of Quad HD (2K) resolution, which also shows that QHD has been becoming a trend now. So why weren’t you, Meizu Pro 5? If Meizu had made it with the 2K, Meizu Pro 5 would have not lost this screen battle.

Not only the display but also the processor makes the Pro 5 different from its peers. It is like one Exynos-powered handset vs four Snapdragon-powered ones. Nonetheless, unlike the above comparison, this time it is not easy for Pro 5’s chip to lose. Exynos 7420 is the strongest in its kind at the moment and used for all powerful machines of the Samsung Galaxy S6 series and Samsung Galaxy Note 5, so it cannot be defeated by the Snapdragon 810 or 801. Anyhow, we have to choose Snapdragon 820 as the most powerful here since it is the latest chip of Qualcomm and obviously better than Snapdragon 810 and maybe the Exynos 7420.

In addition, one thing that can turn the phones into beasts is the RAM capacity. Since the world’s first 4GB RAM smartphone ASUS ZenFone 2, people are welcoming more and more 4GB RAM handsets now. As a result, we are not surprised when most of them boast such a big RAM and Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro only sports 3GB RAM. Easy to understand, right?! Last year was not the year of 4GB RAM.

Next, we want to talk about the camera. It is completely the LG G4 Pro to be the winner thanks to its combo of 27MP rear and 8MP front snapper, perfect for those who love taking photos 😉 ! The runner-up is Meizu Pro 5 with 21MP main and 5MP secondary shooter. They are still awesome cams so far! Though, we cannot ignore the ZTE Axon Pro. It is very interesting with the dual camera on the back. Therefore, we want to vote it as the most unique smartphone today. Do you agree 🙂 ?

Last but not least, it is about the battery. Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro absolutely beats the others because of its 4,000mAh cell. Then, if you own a Z2 Pro, you can comfortably use it in more than 24 hours with just a single charge. That is also the reason why we must have this Lenovo device in today’s battle.

Conclusion:

Well, those are the main sides of the above Pro phones we want to analyze. Their prices can be varied and different through time, but in fact, they are quite similar. As a result, you should consider them carefully and base on your needs to pick out the most suitable and best for yourself.

Guess that you have one winner in your mind 😉 ! Share with us!

MediaTek claims that Helio X20 can help take 32MP selfies? Is it a joke?

Maybe at last MediaTek is able to show its real strength! Mediatek has announced the deca-core Helio X20 as their latest and best chip so far. We say that because not long ago, Mediatek posted a picture on their Twitter page, suggesting that this processor can allow you to take up to 32MP selfies plus fast focus technology!

mediatek

According to the company, the Helio X20 deca-core chipset consists of three clusters: quad-core Cortex A53 clocked at 1.4GHz for simple tasks, another quad-core at 2.0GHz for more intensive tasks, and double-core Cortex A72 at 2.5GHz for when you need all the grunt at once.

Normally, there is no sensor naturally capable of taking 32MP photos without the help of some software tricks. Yet, if it really happens next year or even in the next years, Mediatek claims to be the processor that can support such a sensor.

This is good news for us as well as other consumers when we are pretty close to the end of the year and some new devices powered by Helio X20 chip are going to be launched in the time between December 2015 and January 2016. Currently, we’ve got HTC A9 Plus and Acer Predator tablet which have already been introduced as machines featuring Helio X20 in HTC A9 Plus specs and Acer Predator specs. As a result, we really hope that the 32MP selfies will come true in the near future.

In case of supporting capturing true 32MP selfies, MediaTek Helio X20 will definitely become the best processor in the mobile industry, way better than its competitors from Qualcomm Snapdragon and Intel.  Anyhow, we cannot just listen to and believe everything they say. We need to see it first 😉 !

Nokia will supply China Mobile with a million TD-LTE devices

Nokia is going to provide one million TD-LTE devices for China Mobile and authorize Nokia Networks to supply this world’s largest mobile operator with their TD-LTE-Advanced tech!

nokia

Previously, China Mobile has announced the plan of installing a million TDLTE base stations at the end of the year. Winning the contract also makes Nokia Networks become the telco’s the largest foreign vendor in China, a market that already has a lot of strong and rich domestic vendors.

“This deal is a big achievement that makes us the number one non-Chinese network vendor in China for the third year in a row,” said Mike Wang, President of Greater China for Nokia Networks.

Specifically, the TD-LTE-Advanced technology Nokia Networks will provide China Mobile is based on the Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station. It can support a wide range of frequency bands such as 2.6GHz (band 41), 2.3GHz (band 40) and 1.9GHz (band 39). Moreover, using carrier aggregation software can enable macro and small cells to run more efficiently since it combines various available spectrums to help transfer data quicker.

In September, 2015, China Mobile displayed 220Mbps peak data transfer rates at Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2015 and they were created on Nokia Networks’ on 3.5GHz interband TD-LTE-Advanced carrier aggregators. In addition, the companies have also demonstrated 4.1Gbps speed with the  TDD-FDD carrier aggregation of Nokia.

According to Nokia Networks, they have 50 commercial references on 6 continents in terms of delivering TD-LTE radio technology. That is quite an impressive number!

All of this seems somehow confirms again the reputation, strength and capabilities of Nokia in general, signaling a great development as well as comeback next year! Let’s wait and see!

Meizu Blue Charm Metal price – 3GB RAM and Helio X10 chip for RM870

Meizu Blue Charm Metal is known as the upcoming phablet of the company this month, after the Meizu Pro 5 launch in August, 2015. And recently, we’ve got its price which is at…

We heard about Meizu Blue Charm Metal for a while and it definitely will come with a all-alloy metal cover which is very beautiful and premium. More specifically, according to a recent teaser released by the firm, it will feature a magnesium-aluminum alloy build with 5 color variants: Pink, Blue, Gold, Grey and White. However, the most important thing is that Meizu Blue Charm Metal price is extremely affordable.

Yes, we can say that when comparing the specifications and the cost, so before letting you know how much the Metal exactly is, we would like to mention Meizu Blue Charm Metal specs first. Many leaks show that the coming Meizu phablet will sport a 5.5-inch Full HD screen, an octa-core 2GHz MediaTek Helio X10 chip paired 3GB RAM. The internal storage is capable of 16GB and expandable up to 128GB. As for the camera, a 5MP front and a 13MP rear snapper are on-board and the main OS will be YunOS. Besides, the whole handset will be powered by a 3,050mAh battery.

Well, as we mentioned, such good features will come with a pretty good price. 5 tips to buy the best second-hand smartphone

If buying a brand new smartphone is not what you think of after your old one being stolen or broken, you can consider buying a used device. But, of course there will be some risks that you have to deal with. So, in order to help you reduce the risks as much as possible, we would like to give you a checklist when it comes to purchasing a second-hand phone!

1. Bill, box and accessories are what you should ask for!

Just exactly like when buying a new phone, you should ask for bill. It will not only assure you do not get a stolen product but also make it easier for you to sell or exchange it if necessary. For the box, it will help you check IMEI (International Mobile Station Equipment Identity) serial number for added verification.

Surely sometimes a second-hand smartphone is not accompanied with its original accessories, yet you should ask for them and if there is no, you totally can ask the seller to lower the price.

2. 2GB RAM and above are better!

Nowadays, new 2GB RAM smartphones are so common on the market, especially around RM750 or even lower. As a result, it is much better if you choose one sporting at least 2GB RAM. However, if the budget only allows you to buy things between RM300-RM400, you will have to settle for 1GB RAM.

Besides, you need to check the processor as well. If it is powered by a Mediatek chip and over one year old, I am afraid that it cannot deliver good performance, yet Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered phones are different; they seem to last longer. Intel-powered ones can also be good, too; though, note that they affect battery life badly.

3. Say no to a stolen phone!

There always are sellers that try to give you stolen smartphones, which is not good at all. In case of things like that happening to you, ask the seller to give you the box along with the good because it is pretty hard for a thief to have such a “simple” thing, right?! 😀

4. Check the hardware, PHYSICALLY!

Normally, most of us want to buy a beautiful machine even if it is second-hand, so we usually check the body to make sure there is no sign of chipping or any other unexpected marks as well. On the other hand, bringing a laptop and a USB cable with you to the store is also a good idea since you can connect the phone with the laptop to see whether it charges and transfers data well.

Moreover, insert your own sim card to test. We surely do not want a phone without ability to catch the network easily. Also, do not forget to surf the web, download a few apps, take a few photos, etc. The phone has to be at an acceptable perfect level for our basic needs.

5. Warranty is important!

We usually see cases in which people just bought a handset and soon wanted to upgrade it, sometimes even within a few months. This means official warranty is still valid and such a machine will become an excellent deal for you. If you are not so lucky to get one, some with expiring warranties not long after that also can be taken into consideration. Or, you’d better look for smartphones coming with third-party warranties just in case you need some damage protection.

This is the third generation of Xiaomi MiTV, which is totally new but priced at half the money other 60-inch 4K TVs cost. It obviously shows that Xiaomi is “attacking” the TV industry in the same way that they use for smartphones. They also wants to challenge themselves with producing a high quality TV but as cheap as possible, according Lei Jin, CEO of the company, at the launch event of Xiaomi new products in Beijing.

Specifically, Xiaomi has just announced a big screen TV with Ultra HD (4K) resolution for a Xiaomi MiTV 3 price tag of 4,999 Yuan (about $785 or RM3,333), which is way more cheaper than many 4K 60″ TV in China. Besides, Xiaomi MiTV 60″ also has new interesting upgrades such as a motherboard and a processor fitted into a detachable speaker. It means all of the TV’s ports are found on the separate speaker, not the display.

On the other hand, the screen connects to the speaker through a single cord combining the signal and power lines. The detachable speaker will allow you to one day upgrade your Xiaomi MiTV’s smart capabilities. If you only like the detachable speaker, you can buy one at 999 Yuan ($155 or RM660) as a standalone device to connect with your available TV.

It is said that there is an app to accompany the device that you can install on your smartphone and access information like speed, distance, etc. Seems like a good deal for us 😉 !

After it was announced in at IFA 2015, many smartphone retailers in our country has tried to bring it here. It is said to belong to mid-range phones, sporting a good package of specifications and a reasonable price. But, how about Lenovo Vibe P1 design? We will have a chance to look at its hands-on pictures today!

Specifically speaking, Lenovo Vibe P1 owns an all-alloy frame. You can remove the part on the top of the rear to put microSD card and 2 nano SIMs in. It now has 2 colors: Platinum and Graphite Grey. Generally, the phone design is not really outstanding with 4 rounded corners and a flat camera, which reminds us of HTC One series. However, Vibe P1 colors bring a premium feeling like a high-end device to consumers.

The most special thing about Lenovo Vibe P1 is its battery of 5,000mAh enabling the handset to definitely last about 2 days and above. As a result, its thickness also increases to 9.9 mm and it weighs 189 grams. Yet, it does not seem a minus for this Lenovo product. Actually, people feel more sturdy when holding it in their hands.

Besides, the Lenovo Vibe P1 features Rocket Charge tech which allows P1 to reach 3 hours of non-stop calling with just 5 minutes of charging. Wow!

As for other Lenovo Vibe P1 specs, there are a 5.5-inch Full HD screen, an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 1.5GHz chip, a fingerprint sensor built in the home button, 3GB RAM plus 16GB of expandable storage (up to 128GB via microSD card). Moreover, Lenovo Vibe P1 sports a 13MP rear camera with LED flash and a 5MP front-facing snapper. The phone also supports a dual SIM and runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop OS.

In conclusion, with this Vibe P1, Lenovo company shows that they are still following the trend of big battery smartphones along with other good-enough features. It surely will meet people’s basic needs. So, do you like it? Share with us your opinions 😉 !
