What is Retina display?

Actually, different from quad-HD display or ultra-HD display, Retina display is a market term, not a technical term. However, there’s still a way to define it! Retina display is a display on a computing device whose pixel density is high enough so that the human eye cannot distinguish individual pixels. Another way to describe retina display is that the image on that display has no differences from the image in the real world, or at least there are some differences that the human eye cannot recognize!

So how many pixels does a Retina display have?

The resolution of Retina display depends on the screen size. Normally, the resolution in smartphone display are shown in the format of [number of pixels]x [number of pixels]. But with Retina display, the resolution is expressed in the form of pixel density. This makes sense actually, because an 8-inch full HD screen is more poor-looking than a 5.5-inch full HD screen. If you smartphone has a large screen but low pixel density, the display is still disappointing!

Even when we define Retina display by mentioning the pixel density, there are still many ways to classify this technology. It also depends on the distance between the display and our eyes! Normally, the pixel density are 326ppi (pixel per inch) for smartphones, as we tend to hold our phones the closest to our eyes. For tablets, it’s 264ppi and for laptops, it’s 220ppi.

Apple has announced that iPhone 7 will come in three variants: iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone 7 Pro. That seems crazy when iPhone supports Android, right? But actually, Apple is finding a new Ecosystem, as the recent report. The big question is : Why? iPhone is supporting wonderful performance. For 2 years, Google has been the first technology company which landed in the first position of ” Top technology companies” list from last year. But now, for some reasons, it dropped at number 2.

The first technology company: Google or Apple?

FutureBrand is a trustworthy organization which determines the world’s top 100 favorite companies every year. Last year, FutureBrand has shown their list and Google landed in the first position. They have won the number 1 for the past two years.  But now, Apple gets the top while Google has dropped off of the list entirely. There isn’t any problem in the company, but Google still lost their top rank because it has been subsumed by Alphabet.

As you know, Alphabet hasn’t high rank as Google has and stops at number 21 on this year’s list. That mean this is the chance for other companies. Apple is one of them when they beat Google and become the first technology company. Last year they land in second place and in 2014 is fourth place. Recently, TrendForce- a Taiwanese market research company- has just unveiled the top smartphone ranks for Q2 2016, along with some numbers. With this report, we can find out which brand is ruling in the phone market. So, let’s have a look at the third largest smartphone market first- China. In Q2 of 2016, Huawei brand with Huawei phones is the name on top of the chart with nearly 21% market shares.

This is kinda surprised, right? Because Xiaomi brand is the most potential nominate for this crown. Not so long ago, on the Antutu charts, Xiaomi with Redmi Note 3 gets the number 1 spot on the “most popular smartphones” chart in China. And now, Huawei phones surpasses Xiaomi’s. This brand not only can’t be the king but also falls to the fifth position with 10% market shares on the “top five Chinese smartphone brands” rank.

Come in the second place is Oppo with 12.7%, right after that is Vivo with 10.6%. Lenovo with 10.3% is holding its spot on the fourth place. However, on the global chart, Huawei just stands in the third place with 9.2%. The champion title belongs to Samsung (24.5% worldwide market shares). The runner-up is Apple with 15.1%. After that is Oppo, LG and Vivo with the market shares of 5.6%, 5.4% and 4.7% respectively.

Chinese smartphones are rising

According to the TrendForce report, Samsung shipped nearly 77 million units. While the number in the Apple is 48 million. These are the huge numbers, right? However, the Chinese smartphone amounts are even bigger than the combined amounts of the US and Korea companies. In Q2 this year, the total amounts of smartphones from China get to 139 million units. This number has risen about 13.8% compared to the previous quarter. With this growth, the volume from this country can be even more than the global average in Q3. Maybe Samsung and Apple could lose the top slot into Chinese brands. Who knows.
