After the leaked information about giving up on smartphones in 2017, HTC has just declared that they haven’t given up yet. HTC is still working on their next flagship – HTC 11. These companies to produce the foldable devices might hold the 20% of the smartphones market share. The Kolon Group which is known as one of the only company in the entire world to produce colorless polyimide said that it is supplying materials to a various manufacturer. It also said that it was supplying it to Samsung and LG, but they did not mention anything about what these materials were going to be used for. Kolon Industries’ head Kang Chung-seok believes the foldable displays will make headway in South Korea.

Here is a what it also said: “there are 3 to 5 technology companies that are expected to mass produce foldable phones in 2018 worldwide”.  Companies like Samsung, LG, Xiaomi and even Apple are all moving from the LCD to OLED. the reason for this shift of screen model is that the OLED can easily be flexible and can be curved, foldable and also rollable. This is what makes the difference between the liquid-crystal displays (LCD) and organic light-emitting diode displays (OLED).

Kang also said that he really believe that the early foldable smartphone might launch in 2017, probably by the Korean giant (Samsung). In case if you’re wondering, a bend radius is simply the minimum radius something can be bent without causing damage to it. Therefore, a smaller radius means that a certain material is more flexible: obviously, a very important consideration when talking about folding smartphones. “Tech companies are likely to unveil the bend radius of 5 millimeters first and then gradually unveil devices with less bend radius.”

Foldable phones could take 20% of market share
