Huawei’s latest phablet the Huawei Ascend Mate 7, shows that Huawei can achieve Top Level hardware and performance to compete with Apple iPhone 6 Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note 4. And while the Ascend Mate still has some room for improvement on OS Site, Huawei secures themselves a firm position in the World Smartphone Race.

Huawei Ascend Mate 7

The Ascend P7 Phone showed already what huge potential Huawei has, if they really focus. For sure Huawei took a lot of design inspiration from the Apple iPhone 4 Series, but it was still a very well built and solid phone, much better then most plastic rivals. The big problem with the Ascend P7 was the Software, as one Reviewer said: “it’s nice until you turn it on.” Due to the laggish software the performance gap between Ascend P7 and the competition from Apple and also Xiaomi was very huge.

Huawei Asend Mate Rear

Now Four Month later, the Huawei Ascend Mate 7 shows the same focus and classy high end materials, while erasing a lot of the previous software problem with Huawei’s new EMUI OS. The Ascend Mate 7 is a huge premium metal phablet, which is roughly the same size as iPhone 6 Plus, but with more Screen estate of half an inch. The Screen of the Ascend Mate 7 is 1080p and not 2K like some of the competitors like the Note 4. At the IFA 2014 Huawei told us that the increased battery usage for 2K screen is just not worth it yet, and we agree with that. The Ascend Mate 7 screen is definitely very good looking and crisp enough.

The Ascend Mate 7, though beautiful, is due to its 6 inch size, still a very big phone. Overall Huawei achieved though to make a device that is just a tad bigger then the Note 4. You get a large screen, huge battery and slim metal body. As the enormous success of the Samsung Note Series showed, huge phones have their benefits. The Ascend Mate 7 is definitely a strong portable tablet, while still fitting your pocket. Especially the extreme strong battery life on the Mate 7 makes it really interesting and a worthy competitor for the Note 4 and other rivals.

Premium High End Quality on all Edges

The Mate 7 is not just compared to older Huawei Models beautiful, its an attractive and high class device in general. The lightly curved metal back blends into plastic sections in top and bottom, you get the impression of a nearly seamless case and design. The Mate 7 definitely can compete with the bigger players, for sure it can compete with the Note 4.

huawei ascend mate 7 fingerprint

The Rear of the Mate 7 sports one of the best and most surprising features on this Android Phone – the fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone. Huawei does a good job with the fingerprint scanner implementation, much closer to Apple’s Touch ID then other brands like HTC for example. The Sensor is activated by touch, and recognizes your fingerprint in any direction. While its not 100% accurate it comes very closely. Because, similiar to Apple Touch ID, its touch activated and not like Samsung Swipe activated, it feels much more premium.

Ascend Mate 7 Camera

One surprising use of the Fingerprint Scanner is to use as a shutter button. Since its placed on the backside of the Mate 7 we wouldnt recommend it though.

huawei ascend mate 7 camera

The 13MP Main Camera of the MATE 7 is a very decent camera. In daylight scenes the camera gives us very bright and highly detailed pictures even in very bright scenes. For darker conditions software sharpening helps capturing more details. Especially low light photography remains very inconsistent on a lot of high end Android Smartphones. The Mate’s 7 13MP Shooter can definitely keep up with with other expensive FlagShips like the Note 4.

Huawei Ascend Mate 7 Specs and Performance

The Mate 7 is powered by Huawei’s own eight-core Kirin CPU . The Kirin CPU sports four ARM Cortex A7 cores and four high power Cortex A15s combined with a Mali T628 GPU. Thats similiar to Samsung’s Eight Core Exynos Setup. Huawei’s setup seems just as fast as the Exynos Combination, provided the software is optimized correctly.

Huawei Ascend Mate 7 vs Note 4 vs iPhone 6Plus
Huawei Ascend Mate 7 vs Note 4 vs iPhone 6Plus

Our Mate 7 review unit is the 16GB storage and 2GB RAM option. In selected markets there will be a 32GB/3GB version that also comes in a gold finish. Aside from storage and RAM, the two variants are identical. Even with the 2GB RAM version the Mate 7 is powerful enough in combination with the Eight Core Kirin CPU.

Ascend Mate 7 Power Options

Out of the Box, we must say Huawei’s software is not really set for optimal performance. If you have a look under settings/power savings, the settings are set to smart. If you switch back to normal the phone gets much faster and smooth. Then, after these changes, the Mate 7 gets actually lightning fast and can compete and even beat most other Android Flagships in terms of speed and user experience.

ascend_mate_7_battery

Especially in terms of battery life the Ascend Mate 7 has huge advantage with its 4100 mAh battery. The Nexus 7 tablet for example comes with only 3900 mAh battery and Note 4, the direct competitor is at 3100mAH for the same screen estate. This brings you at least two days of normal usage and even under the most extreme circumstances at least one full day of usage for the Mate 7 phablet.

Huawei’s EMUI, gets better but is not optimal yet….

ascend_mate_7_software_screens

On Huawei’s EMUI 3.0 a lot of previous issues with Huawei’s OS are fixed but not everything perfect yet. On the positive site, things are very smooth and much better looking the before. EMUI has a new style triangle, round and square navigation buttons from Android L and matching colors. Huawei is definitely prepared for the Android L Lollipop Launch. The EMUI UI and its focus on Lines and circles gives the UI a really clean and geometric look, clearlydeoms inspirations from iOS 7 though.

On some other spots we get the same problems as before with the EMUI OS though. One some spots the EMUI still reminds of the mess out cartoonish OS and rounded icons everywhere. Huawei just has to make all app icons round, combined with its own colored background, in the whole UI not only the Launcher. The only option to get around it is to install a custom launcher and new icon pack. Still even then the issue persists on the mate 7.

Huawei Ascend Mate 7 Summary

huawei ascend mate 7 share

EMUI 3.0 is a big improvement for Huawei’S OS compared to earlier versions, but software is still Huawei’s weak side. Especially Samsung and their NOTE Software seem to fully use the potential of this big screen estate with several multitasking and business apps. Huawei has beaten lag and slowness from previous versions though, the Mate 7 is very fast and guaruantess smooth user experience – very promising!

If we look at the Huawei Ascend Mate 7, it seems like Huawei is definitely a brand to watch for the rest of 2014 and the coming year. They are already Number 3 in terms of global Sales, but not it seems they will be able to compete on product designa and quality as well. If Huawei can achieve to bring their OS and Software up to the Standard of their Design and Hardware, we predict that Huawei will be a very worthy competitor for 2015.

Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 2.38.21 PM

As you can see the Huawei Ascend Mate 7 is supposed to launch in October in Malaysia. In terms of pricing the international versions has a price of around 2100RM for the 2GB Ram and 16GB Version that we tested.  If you want to double your RAM and storage the price wil go up to 2500RM and for 3GB/32GB ROM Version.

What do you think of the Huawei Ascend Mate 7? Would you buy it or prefer the Note 4 or even Nexus 6?

Xiaomi Boss fight back to Jony Ive’s Critic for Copying Apple

applevxiaomi
Last week Apple’s Chef Designer, Jony Ive, criticised Xiaomi heavily for copying Apple Products. The Event was in a Q&A with Design fans and now Xiaomi has responded!Jonathan Ive

To be honest, no matter if you are Apple Fan or Xiaomi Fanboy, most of Xiaomi’s newest products and also the OS, MIUI, have more then a few similiarities to Apple. In fact these are too much similiarities to be purely random.

The Xiaomi MI4 is probably the smartphone that got the most attention and popularity, big part of it for its iPhone-like Design. Surely that is not the only product that takes Design Inspirations from Apple and John Ivy.

xiaomi router, apple tv

Like Xiaomi’s TV BOX that looks A lot like Apple TV, you can even compare their battery packs to the Ipods…

xiaomi-apple1

Xiaomi has been criticized by Fans and the Media before for the copying, but been criticized directly by John Ivy, must have worried XIaomi.

In the Q&A with Designers Jony Ive commented on Xiaomi:

“I’ll stand a little bit harsh, I don’t see it as flattery. When you’re doing something for the first time, you don’t know it’s gonna work, you spend 7 or 8 years working on something, and then it’s copied. I think it is really straightforward. It is theft and it is lazy. I don’t think it is ok at all.”

We know Xiaomi bosses not to be shy and keep quiet with former situations like this. As well this time, promptly Xiaomi CEO BIn Lin responded to John Ivy’s critique saying that Xiaomi does not copy anyone:

“Xiaomi is a very open company, will not be forced to ask you only use the products we have a lot of Xiaomi outside. seriously by any individual institution Over millet products qualify say is not copying someone else’s”

He further says that he will give John Ivy a Xiaomi Phone to use and test himself and can make a real judgment.

” I am willing to gift a Xiaomi phone to him (Ive), let him use it over and then really comment . “

What do you think of the whole debate of Xiaomi cs Apple? If Xiaomi really taking too much design inspirations from Apple? Is Jony Ive to rude?

flagship-xiaomi-redmi
The Xiaomi Redmi Phone has been on sale for quite a while now. It feels like a small eternitiy since the low cost Xiaomi phone launched, so we are very excited that a pictures of a new Xiaomi Redmi have leaked.

When the Xiaomi Redmi launched the first time it really was a Monster Deal. The original Redmi Phone came with 4.7 inch 720p display, 8MP Camera, and very powerful processor, this phone was all that the customers wanted, with a great price included. Since then we have seen an updated Redmi 1S with QualComm Snapdragon Processor, but now we finally get an all new model.

flagship-xiaomi-redmi

The new Xiaomi Redmi will probably launch in Q4 and Xiaomi will use a Mediatek Processor instead of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon CPU. The Xiaomi Redmi will sell at 1499 Yuan (RM799) with Mediatek’s newest MT6595 Octa-Core CPU. With this pricing the new Xiaomi Redmi is targeted directly at the Meizu MX4.

According to our Sources the new Redmi will also sport a 5.5 inch full HD 1920x1080p Display, 3GB of RAM and a 20MP main camera along with LTE support.

The leaked pictures show the back panel of the supposedly new Redmi, which has definitely space for Dual LED flash and we can see the famous MI Logo.

So far we only have the Meizu MX4 and Zopo in the MT6595 CPU phones Race. If Xiaomi really launches the new Redmi with those specs and price of RM799 they could take Position Number 1 with their new phone.

IPHONE 6, SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 AND HTC ONE (M8) COMPETES IN A REAL WORLD SPEED TEST

PhoneBuff-iPhone-6-vs-Galaxy-S5-vs-HTC-One-M8

When the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus were launched firstly a lot of people, especially from the Anroid Fanbase making fun of Apple. The biggest argument against the new iPhone 6 Devices was that they are outdated and feature hardware and specs that we see on Android phones since 2 years already.

The new iPhones sport “only” dual core processor and 1GB of RAM while the newest Android Smartphones easily sport 3GB of RAM and quad or even Eight Core processors. How do the new iPhones perform in direct comparison with Android Flagships though? We have a Video for that.

PhoneBuff took the iPHone 6, HTC One (M8) and Galaxy S5 and compared them side by side for a speed test in real world conditions. All three phones are rebooted to make them as fresh and equal as possible and all three are connected to the same WIFI Network.

Following all three phones, the iPHone 6, HTC One M8 and Galaxy S5 need to pass through a virtual obstacle course” to see which smartphone is finishing the first. On all three phones the same apps are opened, and wait till the phone loads them fully, before closing them and opening up the next app. In the each obstacle rounds is done twice, to test initial loading and then multitasking performance of the phones. All the tests are measured by a timer to track how fast the phones can load the apps. What is the result though?

Are you surprised by the results of the Speed Tests? Let us know in the comments !

This is the Xiaomi Gamepad!

 xiaomi-gamepad

Xiaomi Mi TV and MI BOX owners who are into gaming can now enjoy Xiaomi’s very first Xiaomi Gamepad, which beginns shipping now to customers in China.

With Xiaomi’s aggressive global expansion strategy, Xiaomi has become a major player in the phone market and also tablet market with products like the Xiaomi MI4. Not unlike Apple, Xiaomi also extends their programm vertically into customer living rooms with with the MI TV, MI BOX and also now the Xiaomi MI Gamepad.

China has just recently lifted the banning of consoles and opened up the doors for that market. Xiaomi is using that to launch the new gamepad, which can convert the Xiaomi MI TV and MI BOX into Android Gaming Stations.

xiaomi-gamepad

If you have a look at the pictures, you can see that the Xiaomi MI Gamepad is very similiar to the XBOX 360 controller or other PC Gamepads. We see the common two dual analogue sticks, the direction pad and an action button to the right and on the top of the Xiaomi accessory.

So far Xiaomi has only been shipping the Gamepad to a few lucky customers in China with a very special discount price. As with the MI4 and other Xiaomi devices, international customers have to wait for the full production of the Xiaomi Gamepad before they will be available officially or via resellers.

We actually like the Xiaomi MIpad, so probably will try it out these next coming month, given that we cant get one. How do you like the Xiaomi Gamepad? Do you fancy buying one?

Meizu MX4 with Ubuntu Touch OS spotted!

ubuntu-touch-mx4

We have been seeing UBUNTU Touch since beginning of the year on various Meizu Smartphones, like the Meizu MX3. Now finally the Meizu MX4 Phone has been showing with UBUNTU Touch as well.

Start of the year Meizu and Canoncical have been presenting the Meizu MX3, running on Ubuntu Touch as an alternative OS for the Meizu phone. Fans could see Ubuntu Touch presented at the CES and MWC but so far we havent seen an official timetable for fans to download Ubuntu Touch.

Read our Full Meizu MX4 Hands on Review

Time has been running fast and Meizu has already launched the Meizu MX4, forcing Canoncial to develop Ubuntu Touch for the Meizu MX4 Mediatek phone, and now we can finally see it.

ubuntu touch meizu mx4

Our first picture shows the Meizu MX4 running with Ubuntu Touch on the Mediatek powered smartphone. The official Launch of Ubuntu for the Meizu MX4 will be December. It seems that Meizu is really innovative with their Meizu MX4. In addition to Flyme 4.0 and Ubuntu Touch, the Meizu MX4 has also been seen with YunOS working. YunOS is and Android based OS, made by Chinese E-Commerce Giant AliBaba.

Ubuntu Touch essentially uses the same core technologies as Ubuntu Desktop, so apps that are designed for Ubuntu Desktop will also run on Ubuntu Touch and vice cersa. Additionally Ubuntu Desktop parts support the Ubuntu Touch System. That means that your Ubuntu Touch Device can provide a full desktop experience when connected with an external monitor or docking station.

There are some rumors that Ubuntu for the new Meizu MX4 PRO will be available as an Option at Launch and apparently Canonical got Ubuntu Touch running for the Mediatek MT6595 CPU. This could mean that other smartphone manufacturers could work on opening up their smartphones for Ubuntu Touch OS.

What do you think about Ubuntu Touch on the Meizu MX4 and possibly other chinese Smartphones soon?

Meizu MX4 Pro Specs and Price Leak

meizu-mx4-pro-hero

Last Night we saw the first time pictures that claim to show the Meizu MX4 Pro Smartphone Pricing and Specs. Those Pictures come from source very close to Meizu, and show how much the Successor of the very successful Meizu MX4 will cost.

We believe that Meizu will launch their real 2014 Flagship Smartphone End of October. Earlier leaks suggested that the Meizu MX4 Pro will come with the same Design as the Meizu MX4, but now we can see that the Pro Version will in fact be larger and have a few design changes as well.

Read our Meizu MX4 Hands on Review

The Meizu MX4 Pro will come with a 2KQuad HD display and a 2560 x 1440 resolution, which will in fact be a tad larger with 5.4 inch, instead of 5.36 inch. The Trademark Meizu Home Button will be replaced with a rectangle physical button, that is probably including a fingerprint scanner.

meizu mx4 hands on 4

The Meizu MX4 Pro will sport Samsung’s Exynos Octacore 5430 Processor, including LTE and hifi Audio. The Exynos Octacore 5430 is also used in the new Samsung Alpha and features big.LITTLE processor with four Cortex-A7 cores at 1.8 Ghz and 1.3 Ghz. The eight cores can run at the same, so we expect excellent multi core performance. The Processor comes also with hexa-core Mali-T628 MP6 GPU, which is the newest Mali available design.

The Camera on the MX4 Pro will probably still be the gorgeous 20.7 MP Sony Shooter that we see already on the Meizu MX4.
But what about the pricing of the new Meizu MX4 Pro? The Meizu MX4 Pro will sell at 2499 Yuan (1325RM/405USD) in China, but we dont have confirmation for international pricing yet.

What do you think about the Meizu MX4 Pro Specs? How do you feel about the Samsung Exynos Octa Core Processor and physical home button?

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Malaysian Launch on 15.October

samsung-galaxy-note-4-malaysian

If you waited for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 official launch – the Galaxy Note 4 is launching on 15th October in Malaysia. You should be able to purchase the Note 4 relatively shortly after, also Maxis, Digi and UMobile preparing to sell the Galaxy Note 4 on contract soon.

The SamsunG Galaxy Note 4 will launch in Malaysia with Samsung’s Exynos Processor, which we spotted recently in the SIRIM DB, and not Snapdragon’s 805 CPU as in other countries. The Note 4 sports a 5.7″ Quad HD AMOLED display. The Exynos 5433 is an Octa-Core Processor (4x Cortex A53 cores at 1.3GHz + 4x Cortex A57 cores at 1.9GHz) and is combined with 3GB of Ram and 32GB of internal memory. The internal memory on the Note 4 is extendable via MiCro Sd.

samsung-galaxy-note-4-exynos-antutu-01

For Performance, first benchmarks from Antutu show that the Exynos 5433 is stronger then the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 competitor. Even in Graphics Benchmarks, the ARM Mali-T760 GPU on the Exynos 5433 seems to beat the Snapdragon’s Adreno 420 GPU. To be fair Antutu benchmarks, should be taking with a grain of salt though, since they are not always fully accurate.

samsung-galaxy-note-4-exynos-antutu-03
If you cannot wait for the offcial launch, Lazad is already offering the Import Version for RM2225 with “200lazadavoucher” Code.

We will definitely give you the newest details after the launch of the Note 4. Maybe Samsung will suprise us with the Snapdragon 805 CPU Version for Malaysia.

What do you think of the SamsunG Galaxy Note 4 Launch for Malaysia?
