Nokia has returned: the successful year of Nokia smartphones

One year ago, HMD Global took over one of the most popular phone brands: Nokia. After a short time, this giant manufacturer has revamped the glory days of Nokia. There has been a huge demand for Android Nokia smartphones in 2017. Moreover, the market share reports show that approximately 16 million Nokia handsets were sold in Q3 2017.To be specific, according to Counterpoint research, in 2017 HMD Global shipped 2.8 million Android Nokia Smartphones and 13.5 million Nokia Feature phones.

This brought Nokia to 8th global smartphone vendors ranking in 2017. Nokia comes 3rd spot in the feature phone market and 16th in the smartphone market. Furthermore, Nokia offers in wide price segments for users. From the low-budget smartphone Nokia 2 to the premium Nokia 8. In addition, Nokia 3310 is also redesigned to suit different budget. Now phone community is waiting for the upcoming Nokia 9 flagship with dual front-facing cameras.

At the moment, most of Nokia smartphones are available in the different market, except for Nokia 7. This Nokia 7 is only exclusive in China. For HMD Global to enter a market and reach more than 16 million sales in the first 12 months is a huge accomplishment. According to CounterPoint research: “Within quarters of its re-entry in the market, Nokia HMD quickly graduated to the 3rd spot in the feature phone segment. Nokia’s smartphones have also been well received in the market making it grow rapidly in recent quarters. The brand’s sentimental value within dealers and customers paired with quality smartphone launches are helping Nokia gain further market share”.

The future of Nokia

We expect that in 2018, the rank for Nokia smartphone and Nokia feature phone will climb due to the launch of the new flagship Nokia 9 and Nokia with a qwerty keyboard. However, Nokia also has some strong rivals to overcome such as Apple, Samsung, Huawei,… Maybe this brand should have some key strategies to gain more of the market share in 2018.
